Mechanical Engineer
Positions: Mechanical Engineer (ME), Senior Mechanical Engineer (SME), Discipline Leader of
Mechanical Engineering (DLME)
Reporting Structure:
- ME Discipline Leader (DLME) reports to the Director of Design
- SME and ME report to DLME
MS/SME: Responsibilities include HVAC, plumbing, fuel, and fire protection systems. Designs
large and complex projects. Coordinates all mechanical, plumbing and fire protection designs
with architectural, electrical and structural departments.
DLME: Manages and supervises the Mechanical Design Department. Responsibilities include
HVAC, plumbing, fuel, and fire protection systems. Designs large and complex projects.
Coordinates all mechanical, plumbing and fire protection designs with architectural, electrical
and structural departments. Supports Project Managers.
Duties & Responsibilities: ME/SME: With minimum supervision from their supervisor, the ME/SME will directly perform field investigations, prepare designs and specifications as it relates to their discipline (HVAC, plumbing, fuel, and fire protection), and estimated costs. The ME/SME will consult with their supervisor, client and architect when applicable to determine functional and design criteria of the project. The ME/SME will also collaborate with other designers engaged in the preparation of drawings and specification documents; plan layout of project; prepare contract documents for building contractors; prepare scale drawings; integrate with
architectural and other engineering elements into unified design; conduct periodic on-site observation of work during construction to monitor compliance with plans. DLME will be responsible for their own projects as well as oversee the mechanical engineering department and provide QA/QC for all mechanical department construction documents.
Additional requirements include:
- Mission critical, telecom or Data Center experience.
- Systems include HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and fuel storage & delivery.
- QA/QC all mechanical department construction documents.
- Respond to code official reviews and comments.
- Attend construction meetings, review shop drawings, respond to contractor RFI’s.
- Conduct punch list and final inspections.
- Develop drawing packages using AutoCAD and REVIT.
- Overnight travel for field surveys, inspections, client meetings, etc.
- Proficient with HVAC load calculation software. SWSG uses Carrier HAP.
- Write/edit/check Masterspec specifications.
- Write and edit “sequence of operations” and commissioning scripts for complex systems.
- Perform and write feasibility and facility condition reports.
- Experience with manufacturer equipment selection programs.
- LEED certification is desired
Skill Sets: Talented construction industry mechanical engineer with strong design background
and experienced people manager.
Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering
License: PE License with NCEES council record
Experience:
- ME: Minimum 4-5 years of experience in the commercial construction industry.
- SME: Minimum 7 years of experience in the commercial construction industry.
- DLME: Minimum 10 years of experience in the commercial construction industry.
Work location: Office, Herndon Virginia.
