SWSG's Hidden Oaks Nature Center Project Wins VRPS Award
July 8, 2024
The Hidden Oaks Nature Center project has been honored with the Virginia Recreation and Park Society (VRPS) Award for Best New Renovation: Brick and Mortar. This $1.7-million project focused on significant upgrades to the existing nature center to meet accessibility requirements and included a 2,555 SF expansion to accommodate new offices and multipurpose rooms. SWSG collaborated with a civil engineer to move an existing pond to a new location, ensuring it is accessible. The expansion’s design was inspired by the existing facility’s exterior, using environmentally friendly, kid-friendly finishes that blend seamlessly with the natural setting of the park. Key improvements included renovating toilet areas, adding new storage closets, upgrading flooring, creating a new reception desk, and establishing ADA-compliant walkways. The project is also LEED certifiable, emphasizing our commitment to sustainability.
The renovation provided much-needed activity space, upgraded restrooms, and a new pond, demonstrating SWSG’s commitment to enhancing community spaces. The reopening event drew hundreds of visitors who enjoyed nature activities, performances, and the opportunity to engage with the improved facilities. This project not only enhanced the functionality and accessibility of the Hidden Oaks Nature Center but also strengthened the relationship between site users and the Fairfax County Park Authority. SWSG is honored to have been part of this transformative project.
